OK so maybe I made up that name but it has a certain ring to it… maybe it will catch on…

ANYWAYS… With exactly one month left until The Barons enter a real life studio to utilize the amazing support we garnered during our Kickstarter campaign ($2000 plus! — only one day left to help!) we all met in the city for a practice/writing weekend and agreed a little while ago to play a little game to see what kind of “influence” we can have on each other going into recording. Here are the rules…

Each member of the band chooses 4 albums for the other members to listen to. One that they give to everyone, and 3 that they give to each other member individually. Now each member of the band has 7 albums that they have to listen to as exclusively as possible for the next month until we record. These albums don’t necessarily have to be ones we haven’t heard before, in fact that is rarely the case in this instance (see immediate reactions),BUT it is strongly encouraged to have serious reason(s) for choosing that album for the band or for the person you are giving it to. Here are the albums that we will be listening to for the next month, the year of release and who it was given by…

===

The whole band will be listening to…

The Beatles – Abbey Road (1969) (Dylan)

The Raconteurs – Consolers of the Lonely (2008) (Dan)

Wilco – Summerteeth (1999) (Matt)

Wilco – A Ghost is Born (2004) (Aaron)

===

Aaron will be listening to…

Bob Dylan – Bob Dylan (1962) (Dylan)

Queens of the Stone Age – Rated R (2000) (Dan)

M. Ward – Post War (2006) (Matt)

===

Matt will be listening to…

Dr. Dre – The Chronic (1992) (Dylan)

Modest Mouse – Good News for People Who Love Bad News (2004) (Dan)

Whiskeytown – Pneumonia (2001) (Aaron)

===

Dan will be listening to…

Pink Floyd – Dark Side of the Moon (1973) (Dylan)

Spoon – Gimme Fiction (2005) (Matt) (Was gonna give Abbey Road but chose his second option to avoid doubling)

Radiohead – OK Computer (1997) (Aaron)

===

Dylan will be listening to…

Limp Bizkit – Significant Other (1999) (Dan)

Local Natives – Gorilla Manor (2010) (Matt)

REM – Automatic for the People (1992) (Aaron)

===

Immediate reactions:

– Matt and Aaron really like Wilco

– Dan is going to be listening to a lot of HUGE CLASSIC ALBUMS

– Whiskeytown’s Pneumonia takes the award as the ONLY album on the list that the receiver hasn’t heard of before

Significant Other and The Chronic could very easily turn this into a Rap Rock album

-Matt has the most listening to do (by minutes)…

-…while Aaron has the least.

-But Aaron will cover the most time in years (he’ll be listening to albums from ’62-’08)

-Meanwhile, Matty and Dylan won’t be listening to anything made before ’92 (except Abbey Road)

-Dan and Matty seem the most excited to dive into their assignments…we’ll how long that enthusiasm lasts…

What kind of impact will this have on how our album turns out? How will we use what we hear on these albums in our recording process? When will Matt start dressing like Dr. Dre? Check back periodically as we continue to discuss our reasons and reactions leading up to our August 17th studio date! Maybe you’ll even learn something!

Barons out!
